God Is Not Only the Author of Your Life; He Is Also the Editor of Your Story

Have you ever felt like your life is a patchwork of choices made by others, like people have written their own lines into your story without your permission? At times, it can feel like much of what has happened to you is the result of someone else’s decisions. And when you finally had the chance to make choices for yourself, they may have been shaped by pressure, pain, or frustration, leading to decisions that wounded more than they healed.

Scripture tells us that God knows our stories before we are born (Psalm 139:16). But what happens when your life doesn’t unfold the way you think God would have written it? So what does God do with the parts that were never meant to be there? The answer is simple and powerful: He edits them. God is not only the Author of your life, He is also the Editor of your story. And this truth becomes clear in the story of Hagar, an Egyptian slave girl who found herself trapped in someone else’s story.

Hagar’s Story

Hagar’s life was shaped by betrayal, mistreatment, and misunderstanding at the hands of Sarah, her mistress and Abraham’s wife. Hagar was compelled into a union with Abraham to bear a child for Sarah, a situation rooted not in love, but in power, survival, and social pressure. Hagar carried a child who would not truly be considered hers. As tension grew between Hagar and Sarah, mistreatment followed. Eventually, Hagar fled into the wilderness , alone, vulnerable, and displaced. Yet it was there, in the desert, that God met her.

Hagar became the first woman in Scripture recorded as encountering God directly and receiving a personal promise for her son, a promise echoing the covenant given to Abraham. In that moment, God showed something profound: He sees those the world overlooks, and He moves toward those who are pushed aside. God did not erase Hagar’s pain. He stepped into it. He added His promise without pretending the suffering never happened. And He still does that today.

The God Who Edits

God redeems what others have mishandled. He restores what was broken by choices you never made. And yes, He edits the lines that were never meant to define your story. God does not edit with a red pen of shame, crossing out your life and marking you as a failure. He edits with grace. Maybe parts of your story feel messy. Maybe some chapters feel like they were written in pain, fear, or survival. Maybe some pages feel like they were written by someone else entirely. Be encouraged: the Author of your life is still editing your story.
